Growing from a fold of just a few cows to between 40 and 60, we are right where we want to be in numbers. We now are working on improving our line-up of registered core-production dams, expanding our meat sales, and fine tuning the summer hay production systems.
We modified our winter-feeding regimen and we now feed wrapped square haylage that we place in the pastures in early fall. The bales are opened one at a time and fed in place during the winter. The cattle can use the hay as bedding and the plastic under it as a vapor barrier while they eat the haylage for a day or two, then it is on to the next bale in a different location.
We are always looking into ways to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of our farm management techniques, grazing programs, and cattle handling skills.

Since we also both work full time jobs, this can be challenging.
Wrapping bales through the night and building skid sheds into the wee hours, but it is all worth it in the time we spend with the animals. The unique personalities of each of them, the way they interact with each other, the friendships they build with other cattle, and the amazing experience of each new calf being welcomed into the fold by everyone from the bull to the other cows and calves. In August of 2019 we completed the state inspection process and opened our farm store which we sell frozen cuts of beef, burger, and whole chickens from. We are selling some of our unregistered cattle to make room for the new registered dams as we can find the right animals. |
We keep around 10-20 steers in the mix that will be processed as they reach maturity.
Looking ahead, we plan to continue the improvements to our rotational grazing systems by adding more pasture, making improvements to our calving facilities, and putting in additional automatic waterers. We have some heifers, cows, and a prospect bull available in 2020 for sale. Inspected beef cuts and burger, and USDA inspected chickens available. Our goal is to not to be a big farm, just an earth friendly one. |
